Axel Tuanzebe has secured a move to Aston Villa after agreeing to a season-long loan, a short statement from the Midlands club confirmed earlier today.
The DR Congo-born defender has already made 30 league appearances for the Birmingham club over 2 successful loan spells. He returns to Villa Park having played a crucial part in Villa’s clinching promotion to the Premier League in 2018/19.
Tuanzebe, who featured in every pre-season fixture for The Reds, will be delighted with this move after only managing 19 appearances for Manchester United last season. The 23-year-old is keen for more game time and the impending arrival of World Cup winner Raphael Varane had undoubtedly decreased his chances of becoming a first-team regular next season. “Of course, with Raphael [Varane] coming in, I can see Axel [Tuanzebe] going out,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told the Manchester United website.
The signing of Tuanzebe comes after 3 astute attacking additions from Aston Villa as Danny Ings, Leon Bailey, and Emiliano Buendia have all joined during this summer’s transfer window. Despite the record-breaking departure of club captain Jack Grealish, Aston Villa will be hoping to improve on last season’s 11th placed finish and decrease the gap between the Top 6.
Before departing for the Midlands, Manchester United confirmed the 23-year-old had penned a new deal with the club which runs until June 2023 with the option of a further year.
The versatile defender, who won the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year award in 2017, is highly rated at Manchester United. Having joined the academy in 2006, he has since made 37 senior appearances for the club following his senior debut in an FA Cup victory against Wigan Athletic 4 years ago.
Despite being confirmed as a Villa player this morning, Tuanzebe starts on the bench in Villa’s final pre-season friendly against Salernitana ahead of their opening Premier League game next weekend.
