Manchester United U23 captain Teden Mengi is set to go on loan to Championship club Birmingham City for the rest of the 2021-2022 season according to reports.
The young center-back was set to go on loan this summer to Derby County after going on loan for them last winter but due to financial troubles and other issues that deal fell apart. United could not find another loan for him so he stayed with the reserve team and even made an appearance in Utd’s last Champions League match against BSC Young Boys.
Mengi is 19 so he is still young and loan moves are a good move for him at this stage in his career. Having him go up against experienced strikers in the Championship is a smart move and very helpful in his development. It is much easier to develop playing against professionals than youth.
As for Birmingham City, they are sitting 18th in the Championship table and are 8 points clear of the relegation spots. There is another United player there on loan in Tahith Chong who is recovering from an Achilles injury so there is a good relationship between the two clubs.
They have one of the worst defenses in the league so Mengi is a good addition for them and will get the opportunities to help them stay up in the championship.
With a couple of center backs in the first team looking to leave United in the summer such as Phil Jones and Eric Bailly, a successful loan for Teden Mengi can see him maybe be in the first-team plans next season or at the very least get him another loan move to a bigger club than Birmingham City.
