Manchester United, somehow, collected all three points against Villareal at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo’s last second winner and Alex Telles’ wonder strike gave the Red Devils a much needed win. Result aside, the performance raised more questions than answers as Villareal outplayed United for long stretches of the game.
1- David De Gea: Solely responsible for keeping United in the game. Pulled off many crucial saves. MOTM. 9
2- Diogo Dalot: Filling in for the suspended Aaron Wan Bissaka, the Portuguese was really underwhelming. Constantly mishit crosses and was targeted on defense. Most of Villareal’s threat came from his side. 2
3- Victor Lindelof: Not an awful performance from the Swede but still not convincing. 5
4- Raphael Varane: His worst performance in a United shirt. Distribution not the best and was caught out massively for their goal. 4
5- Alex Telles: Much better performance than the cup game. Wonder goal got United back in the game. 6
6- Scott Mctominay: Was left isolated for parts of the game due to the formation. Not a great outing. 5
7- Paul Pogba: Really worrying performance again from him. Looks so fatigued and can not play in a 433. 3
8- Bruno Fernandes: Clever assist for Telles’ goal and put in a decent shift. 7
9- Mason Greenwood: Quiet night for him. Put in a sensational cross for Cavani. 5
10- Cristiano Ronaldo: Inevitably scored in the UCL but not his best performance. Looked completely drained at the end of the game. 6
11- Jadon Sancho: United’s best outfield player in the first half. More direct but still a long way away. 5
1- Nemanja Matic: Came on to slow everything down and control the game. Good game. 7
2- Edinson Cavani: His pressing made all the difference in the world. Shouldve scored. 6
3- Fred: Came on late on. His cross led to the goal.
4- Jesse Lingard: Laid the ball for Cristiano to score.
