Manchester United kicked off 2022 in the worst possible way, slumping to a 1-0 home defeat to Wolves. From the get-go, United looked lethargic and it continued as Wolves took control of the first half. The Red Devils controlled the ball more in the second half but managed to create one decent chance, which Bruno missed. The visitors scored a late winner as Joao Moutinho’s volley snuck in through traffic.
1- David De Gea: Had a lot of comfortable saves bar that Neves volley. Woeful distribution again. 6
2- Aaron Wan-Bissaka: Oddly retaining his position after that Burnley game and did not justify it. Most of his crosses were either over-hit or under-hit. 5
3- Phil Jones: Making his first league appearance in over 2 years and did a great job. Swept in and made some crucial challenges to deny Wolves. 7
4- Raphael Varane: Defensively sound but absolutely woeful on the ball. Needs a ball playing CB next to him. 6
5- Luke Shaw: Had an ok first half but weirdly asked to play in a back 3 in the second. 6
6- Scott Mctominay: Really weird decision to start him here. He was needed against Burnley due to the physical presence of the midfield but Wolves absolutely played him out of the park. 4
7- Nemanja Matic: Created the only clear-cut chance of the game. Ok performance. 6
8- Mason Greenwood: United’s only outlet in the first half but was bizarrely the first player hooked. 6
9- Jadon Sancho: Possibly his worst game in a United shirt. Did not know what to do with the ball and should have played Ronaldo through in the first half. 3
10- Edinson Cavani: Pressed and ran but nothing more. Should have played Greenwood through. 5
11- Cristiano Ronaldo: Still unsure if he truly fits this side. Scored an offside goal. 4
1- Bruno Fernandes: Missed a sitter. 4
2- Marcus Rashford: Anonymous cameo. 4
3- Anthony Elanga: Came on at the end.
