Cristiano Ronaldo’s stoppage time equalizer gave Manchester United a hard fought draw against Atalanta in Italy. Manchester United lined up in a back 3 again but were forced to switch back to a 4-2-3-1 when Raphael Varane went off injured. Manchester United are still top with 7 points from 4 games.
1- David De Gea: This was his worst performance of the season by a mile. Let in a very weak shot for Atalanta’s first and was glued to his line for their second. Shades of his performances from the past 2 seasons. 3
2- Aaron Wan-Bissaka: Really, really bad going forwards (again) but was solid in defense. 5
3- Raphael Varane: Forced off with an injury in the first half.
4- Eric Bailly: Probably United’s best player on the night. Battled with Zapata all game but made crucial interception after crucial interception. Lost his man for their second goal and was awful in possession. 8
5- Harry Maguire: Looked decent in a back 5 but really poor in the second half. Looks so slow on and off the ball. 4
6- Luke Shaw: Much improved tonight. Defended the flanks really well but his distribution was still off. 6
7- Paul Pogba: Another awful performance from Paul. Really bad going forward and helping the team in defense. Looks disinterested and disengaged. 2
8- Scott Mctominay: Should’ve been subbed off after needlessly being booked in the second half. Heart-in-mouth moments every time he went in for a tackle. Had an overall decent game. 6
9- Bruno Fernandes: Magnificent assist for United’s first goal but pretty anonymous after. 6
10- Marcus Rashford: Tried to force things too much during the game. 4
11- Cristiano Ronaldo: United’s savior in the Champions League, again, scoring a brace to give his team hope to qualify. 8
1- Mason Greenwood: Provided penetration and an assist to Cristiano. Good cameo. 6
2- Nemanja Matic: Came on to steady the ship and did a decent job. 6
3- Edinson Cavain: Pressed and pressed and pressed. 6
4- Jadon Sancho: Shown flashes in the limited time he had.
5- Donny Van De Beek: Rare cameo
Ole: One could argue that United should be on 0 points given how terribly they’ve been in the Champions League. This was also the case today. Came in with a game plan to play them on the counter and couldn’t provide any penetration when they went ahead. Saved by Cristiano again. 4
