Rio Ferdinand has slammed Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick for airing the club’s “dirty laundry in public” and suggested the club should stop him from doing interviews.
Ralf Rangnick since joining the club has spoken openly about some of the issues at the club but Rio Ferdinand believes he is crossing the line even though many United fans agree with what the German coach has said.
“I don’t agree with the way that he’s airing the dirty laundry in public while he’s still in the hot seat, while he’s still in there,” he told FIVE YouTube show.
“It’s nice sometimes for fans, you want to get a bit of insight, but there’s information that he’s letting out [that he shouldn’t be]. You’re still in the job, man, relax, have some respect for the people around you”, he said.
Ferdinand believes it is disrespectful of Rangnick to speak so openly about the issues at the club and that he is rather distancing himself from his responsibilities.
“Make waves behind the scenes. Push and pull and jostle for positions and outcomes behind the scenes with people. I’ve said this for a couple of weeks now, he’s saying a lot of stuff to almost distance himself from responsibility. But he has to accept some responsibility that the team has got worse since he’s been in there,” Ferdinand continued.
“With all the great work he’s done at previous clubs, a lot of it has been recruiting and bringing players in. He was hired as a manager, running this team and leading it to Champions League football. He failed in that department and there’s no denying it.”
“But then he shifts the blame everywhere and that’s the part that I find really a little uncomfortable.”
Rio Ferdinand also suggested that the Manchester United’s board should intervene at Rangnick’s outspoken press conferences.
“He was hired primarily as an adviser and then to get things done in the dressing room but with the long term thought that he was behind it there will be scenes detailing what is needed for that squad from a recruiting perspective.
“He’s offering names and specific talents that he believes would have a huge impact immediately, in the short and long term, and he’s not being endorsed – and I think that’s where his frustration lies. He mentioned Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic, who went to Juventus, however [United] not moved, he said the board rejected the moves because they’re waiting for the summer
“I think his impatience and frustration is now showing in his interviews. I’ll be honest if I were the club wouldn’t allow them another press conference.”
“I don’t want that stuff to get out in the media. If I’m the person running the club, I would say, “Talk to us, we’ll work it out. You may not agree with what I’m saying, but you’re employed by us, those are the rules, stay within limits.”
“Right now he’s saying things and I’m sure the people behind the scenes raise their eyebrows every time there’s a press conference.”
Manchester United agreed a two-year consultancy contract with Ralf Rangnick once he ends his interim manager tenure but he is set to take over as Austria coach.
