In their 5th successive away defeat, Manchester United have been embarrassed once again this season, this time to Brighton and Hove Albion, with goals from Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard piling more misery on this season for United.
Ralf Rangnick: “It was a terrible performance. From the first until the last minute it was not enough; we can only apologise for this performance and a humiliating defeat.”
Bruno Fernandes: “They outplayed us. They always had a solution. Pressed us better and they deserved the result. A little bit of everything [went wrong]. Quality. Mentality. They deserved to win and we deserve to be in position we are in now.”
Straight away Brighton took control of the game, they had possession in United’s half, keeping it well, playing one-touch football and threatening United’s goal with United struggling to even play simple passes to get into Brighton’s half.
Brighton’s early pressure paid dividends for them as after just 15 minutes they took the lead through Moises Caicedo, his long range strike was cleanly drilled along the ground, through the legs of Scott McTominay and Victor Lindelof and into the bottom corner.
The rest of the first half was pretty dull, with both teams having the share-hold of the ball, but the difference was Brighton had it mostly in United’s half and weren’t able to find the final pass, whereas United struggled to find the pass into midfield, leading to just four first half shots and none on target.
Ralf Rangnick tried to mix things up at half time, bring Fred and Edison Cavani on for Anthony Elanga and Nemanja Matic, but if anything it made the situation worse as Brighton scored three goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half.
Brighton’s second goal came four minutes into the second half, Pascal Gross flashed a dangerous ball across the box, but only found Trossard free at the back-post, he then laid it off for the incoming Cucurella, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Eight minutes later Trossard found himself with another assist, Robert Sanchez’s kick found Cucurella high up the pitch, he laid of inside to Trossard, who found Gross free in the box, who with great skill dragged the ball past Raphael Varane and slotted the ball into the bottom corner very calmly.
Just three minutes later Brighton scored their fourth with an embarrassing chain of events for United, Gross had all the time to drive the ball into the final third, nobody tracked the run of Danny Welbeck, and his chip was heading in, but Diogo Dalot cleared it off the line right into the chest of Trossard to send it into the back of the net.
The rest of the game Brighton sat back, allowing Untied to come onto them, but the United players had already given up, with a few long range shots straight at Sanchez being the only notable events for Untied despite having most of the ball.
A fifth successive defeat, conceding 16 goals in this run is utterly embarrassing for not just the players but the coaching staff as well, but United fans are seemingly used to this now and it’s just another showcase the players as well as the fans have given up on the season.
